As Site Superintendent, I led the construction of this high-performance luxury off-grid cottage on Georgian Bay. Built using precast concrete foundation and wall systems with prestressed roof plates and an overframed butterfly roof, the home delivers exceptional durability and energy efficiency. Power and climate control are fully off-grid, featuring a 40 kW roof-mounted solar array, battery storage, backup generator, and geothermal heat pump managed via Savant automation. All exterior siding, soffits, and custom interior wood features were milled on site from harvested Eastern White Cedar.

There are a few benefits of a precast foundations, mostly speed of install with less on-site labour. This project we used a sandwich wall (4” smooth concrete exterior wythe, 5” insulation, 8” structural wythe), so the outside of the foundation is already finished. It also allowed continuous 5” insulation from the footing to the roof once the walls above were installed.
