$4,000 per period
Canada Apprentice Loan
Registered apprentices in designated Red Seal trades can borrow up to $4,000 for each period of technical training, to a lifetime maximum of $20,000. Repayment normally begins six months after you complete or leave your apprenticeship.

The pathway to Red Seal
From apprentice to Red Seal carpenter.
Five steps, about four years, and you are paid for the whole climb. Every level you finish moves you up the wage range before the ticket is even in your hand.

Find an employer or sponsor
A carpentry employer agrees to sponsor you and train you on the job. This is the step most people underestimate.
02
Register the training agreement
You and your sponsor register it with Skilled Trades Ontario. From that point you are a registered apprentice, earning while you learn.
03
Work and study, three levels
About 7,200 hours in total. EI benefits and the Canada Apprentice Loan can carry you through the school blocks.
04
Write the certifying exam
With your hours and levels complete, you write the Certificate of Qualification exam for General Carpenter.
05
Red SealCertificate of Qualification
Pass and the certificate is issued to you. Add the Red Seal endorsement and the ticket travels to any province.
