Rebuild of a front entrance staircase: six steps, 50 inches wide, pressure-treated structure with a full cedar finish — treads, risers, skirt board and balusters. The listing said 36 inches wide. On site it measured 50. That is a 39% jump in surface area, which changed the material takeoff on every single component: wider treads, longer risers, more balusters, a bigger skirt. Measure first, quote second — that one cost me. Structure is pressure-treated throughout, sized and fastened for a load-bearing entrance stair. Everything visible is cedar. The balusters are 2x2 cedar, spaced to code. Three days, 26.75 person-hours across a small crew. Cedar face. PT bones. Built to be walked on every day for twenty years.
