Roman Mazzocca, PMPI led the HVAC and building envelope retrofit project at the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives. The main goal was to upgrade the mechanical systems and improve the building envelope so the museum could maintain strict temperature, humidity, and environmental control for archival storage and gallery spaces. The project also had to stay within the approved schedule and budget while respecting the restrictions of working in a heritage building. For Building 7, I managed the demolition of the existing rooftop unit and the installation of a new RTU and humidifier, including new ductwork, BAS integration, and roof re-sloping to improve drainage around the new unit. I also managed the interior renovation of the gallery areas, which included demolition of existing walls, ceilings, and floors, installation of new walls, ceilings, flooring, spray foam insulation, natural stone tile, and two new glass vestibules. The scope also included installing three duct heaters into the existing ductwork and ensuring all required fire alarm and sprinkler verifications were completed. For Building 9, I managed the demolition of existing heat pumps, humidifiers, plumbing fixtures, walls, and ceilings in the storage and workshop areas. I managed the installation of new DHUs, humidifiers, an air curtain, ERV, ductwork, dampers, piping, and five new rooftop condensing units, with refrigeration piping routed down to the DHUs through roof doghouses. I also managed the installation of new VESDA and NOVEC fire suppression systems in the archive and storage rooms, new insulated walls and ceilings, lighting, receptacles, millwork, two sinks, an eyewash station, epoxy flooring, two high-density shelving systems, and a replacement window in the workshop area. I ensured all fire alarm and fire suppression systems were verified and interconnected with the mechanical equipment to shut down during alarm conditions. Throughout the project, I managed subcontractors, technical teams, consultants, and client representatives to keep the work aligned with the approved scope, schedule, and budget. I tracked progress, managed issues, reviewed change impacts, supported procurement, managed inspections, and ensured deficiencies were addressed. I also led project closeout by managing commissioning records, as-built drawings, operating manuals, final inspections, and client acceptance. The project was completed on schedule and delivered upgraded, compliant environmental conditions for the museum’s archival storage, workshop, and exhibition spaces.
