Chown

Chown Cottage is a serene, modern Muskoka retreat on Lake Joseph, Ontario. Originally approached as a renovation with accompanying garage and boathouse, the project evolved into a new 2,800 SF build after detailed analysis showed superior value, performance, and longevity. The design unifies all three structures through a cohesive material palette of dark gray siding, warm wood tones, and consistent roofing. Expansive glass openings—particularly the near-full gable glass wall at the fireplace and dual lakeside doors with minimal 8-inch mullions—blur the lines between interior and exterior, maximizing lake views while creating seamless indoor-outdoor living. A simple, efficient parallel-chord truss roof system kept construction straightforward and cost-effective, allowing investment in quality interior finishes, timber accents, and beamwork that evoke traditional cottage warmth. Split-level planning places the main living, kitchen, and primary suite on one accessible floor, with flexible basement spaces (three bedrooms including a bunk room, rec area, and office) below.
