Balsam Lake Covered Deck

Returning to this lakeside cottage, we were brought back to extend the original structure with a custom roof over the rear deck designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing build while elevating both function and finish. The new roof was framed to carry through the home’s Northern craftsman character, featuring exposed valleys from below that required a high level of precision in layout and execution. Every intersection was carefully planned so that the structure not only performed properly from above, but also presented clean, intentional lines when viewed from the finished space beneath. Tying into the existing rooflines added complexity, especially working around established pitches and load paths, but the goal remained consistent make it look like it was always part of the original build. The exposed framing highlights the craftsmanship behind the work, turning a structural requirement into a defining architectural feature. The result is a covered outdoor space that feels fully integrated with the home adding usable square footage while showcasing the structural detail that sets this project apart.
